Longitudinal assessment of gut microbiome composition of healthy undergraduate science students at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica, Investigation of the role of the stringent response in stress tolerance, antimicrobial resistance and pathogenesis in Klebsiella pneumoniae, Environmental regulation of virulence determinants in pathogenic Leptospira endemic in Jamaica, Assessment of interactions between and among foodborne pathogens and their influence on persistence in meat production systems, Heavy metal and disinfectant resistance in mixed biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Building Research Capacity to Study Periodontitis and Associated Systemic Comorbidities in the Caribbean
Paul Brown, JP, PhD is a tenured Professor of Molecular Biology and Head of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona Campus in Jamaica. He obtained his PhD in Microbiology from The UWI, Cave Hill Campus in Barbados, studying postmortem leptospirosis.
Brown joined the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at The UWI in 2001. He is involved in academic advising and mentorship of undergraduate students, and pre- and post-doctoral scientists in the Caribbean and internationally. Over the past 30 years, his research has explored molecular microbiology, global health and basic science questions targeting molecular diagnosis and epidemiology of infectious diseases; climate effects, risk analysis, and socio-economic factors in disease transmission; and nitric oxide- and heavy metal-mediated signal transduction systems in cardiovascular diseases. His work in microbiology has added to the public discourse about the need for differential diagnosis of infections that have protean clinical manifestations, such as leptospirosis, dengue and influenza, antimicrobial resistance in hospital and community settings, and the need for effective antimicrobial stewardship programs.
Brown currently chairs the University’s Occupational Safety and Health committee and is a member of the University Senate. He also serves on the Council for Microbial Sciences (COMS) and has had extensive involvement in ASM as Ambassador for Central America and Caribbean Basin (2010-2012), Chair of the inaugural Ambassador Leadership Circle (2014-2016), and Country Ambassador to Jamaica (2012-2017). During this time, he worked as part of the International Board and provided leadership and oversight for ASM’s strategic direction for communication between international members and Ambassadors and was involved in the appointment and orientation of close to 60 Country Ambassadors.
Brown is an Executive member of the African Initiative Group for Microbiology, which seeks to advance the status of microbiology education, practice and research in Africa, the Caribbean and the African Diaspora. He is a Justice of the Peace in Jamaica. He previously served as a Council member of the International Society of Infectious Diseases (2012-2020) and was a Fulbright Fellow in 2010 at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, St. Paul, Minnesota.
