Biography/Responsibilities/Duties:

Dr Doreen Gordon is an anthropologist and qualitative researcher in the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work. She works on issues of inequality and social justice in African diaspora communities, writing on topics such as race, class, gender, the family, religion, the body, citizenship and political economy. Her recently published book is entitled "Blackness and Social Mobility in Brazil: Contemporary Transformations" which delves into issues of how the black middle classes in Brazil negotiate an unequal and discriminatory society. More recently, she has conducted research on hair and grooming policies in Jamaican high schools, household food security and nutrition, and climate change. She is currently part of an interdisciplinary team of scholars undertaking research on climate change in coastal and watershed communities.

Dr Gordon teaches undergraduate and graduate courses such as: Anthropological Practice, Anthropological Theories, Urban Anthropology, Introduction to Anthropology, Introduction to Sociology, Caribbean Society, and Social and Cultural Anthropology.
