Biography/Responsibilities/Duties:

Martin Hughes is a Jamaican national, currently working in the Department of Food Production, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine (UWI STA) campus as a lecturer of Livestock Science. Martin earned a BSc (First Class Hons) in Agriculture (2008) and Ph.D. in Livestock Science (2016) from The UWI STA. He is presently the coordinator of the MSc Tropical Animal Science and Production programme and sub-editor for the South African Journal of Animal Science. Previously, he worked as an agronomist in the private sector in T&T and as an environmental conservationist for several NGOs in Jamaica.  His areas of specialization include forage management and utilization and nutritional biochemistry of the ruminant animal. His ongoing research programmes are focused on:

  1. Modulating rumen fermentation efficiency to improve forage utilization and reduce GHG emissions from ruminant
  2. Energy and protein metabolism and utilization in ruminants maintained on tropical forages
  3. Precision pasture management and utilization techniques using non-invasive approaches to quantify herbage mass and intake by dairy cows under rotational grazing
  4. Development of non-conventional feedstuffs for feeding ruminants on small farms in the Caribbean

Research Interests

  1. Ruminant/non-ruminant nutrition and production systems
  2. Pasture/forage agronomy and Utilization
  3. Non-destructive tools for nutritional evaluation of feedstuffs
  4. Energy and protein metabolism and utilization in ruminants
  5. Herbage intake, grazing and digestibility assays (in-vitro)
  6. Precision pasture management and utilization
  7. Mitigating GHG emissions from ruminant production systems
