Shani Roper, PhD is Curator of the University of the West Indies Museum and former Research Officer and Acting Director of Liberty Hall: the Legacy of Marcus Garvey. Beginning her career at the Institute of Jamaica in the Museum of History and Ethnography, she has worked on projects exploring material culture and African retention in the post Emancipation period. At Liberty Hall she developed programming on Africa using Liberty Hall’s main teaching tool is the Marcus Mosiah Garvey Multimedia Museum (MMGMM) and was editor of its Journal 76 King Street.
As a historian, her reearch interests lie in histories of Caribbean Childhood and social policy. She has published in the Journal of Caribbean History, Journal for the History of Childhood and Youth and Caribbean Studies.
As a museum professional, Roper's interests lie in museums educational practices and the intersection between museums and histories of trauma in black majority contexts. Her museum programs Monuments in the Caribbean Series and Emancipation Day Matters? Series seek to challenge historic and contemporary political and linguistic boundaries that maintain colonial silos in the region. Currently, as Secretary of the Museums Association of the Caribbean, she chairs the MAC-ICOM Barbados Museum Define project which is currently completing the final stages of its research which engaged museum professionals in the Dutch, English, French and Spanish Caribbean on their perspectives on the definition of museums. The final paper will be published in Dutch, English, French, Spanish and Papiamento under the International Committee for Museology – Latin America and the Caribbean.
