Biography

Dr. Mahuvava is a Lecturer in Medical Physics in the Physics Department of the University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus. He is certified both as a professional physicist and as a medical physicist. He received his MSc and PhD degree in Medical Physics from the University of the Free State as well as an Honours degree in Medical Physics from the University of Cape Town and a bachelor’s degree in Computational Physics from the University of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa. In the past few years, Dr. Mahuvava has made novel research progress in advanced radiation dosimetry; including significant contributions to the upcoming AAPM TG-319 dosimetry protocol, which provides guidelines for accurate dose calculations in radiation biology experiments.  Recently, he won the finalist award at the Worldwide Innovations in Medical Physics (WIMP) scholarship competition for early-career physicists. Presently, working on establishing local DRLs in Trinidad & Tobago. Dr. Mahuvava intends to run his own research lab at UWI in the near future.

Duties:

  • Teaching in medical physics and general areas of the undergraduate physics curriculum
  • Teaching and coordinating MSc programmes
  • Marking Assignments, Coursework examinations, final examinations and performing all other examination related duties
  • Establishing independent research interests and maintaining research output and collaborations.
  • Mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate research students and participating in academic advising.
  • Participating in curriculum development.
  • Provoding departmental, Faculty, University and professional services.
  • Applying for grants and developing an externally-funded research programme.
  • Demonstrating good leadership skills, innovation, commitment and enthusiasim 
  • Interact positively with support and academic staff within the department and the university as well as interface with relevant industry.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
