Dr. Balkaran is a Lecturer in Special Needs Dentistry and Coordinator of the Special Needs Dental Clinic, School of Dentistry at The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine, Trinidad. There, she lectures in Gerodontology and Special Care Dentistry and Ethics and Professionalism. She clinically teaches undergraduate dental students and dental interns at the Special Needs Dental Clinic. She is also an Associate Director NYU-Langone Advanced Education in General Dentistry (LMC AEGD) programme for UWI, which involves the management of programme policies and procedures, completion of Resident competency evaluations, auditing of Residents’ patient charts and the orientation of residents to the programme.
Dr. Balkaran is a general dentist with a Master of Public Health with a Specialisation in Management of Health Systems from the University of Liverpool. She has a special interest in patients with Special Needs and has a Certificate in International Developmental Dentistry at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry/ Underwood and Lee Outpatient Dental Clinic, Kentucky, USA. She uses Nitrous sedation and works with an anesthetist who provides conscious sedation to treat dentally anxious adults and children and those with Special Needs as an associate dental practitioner.
Additionally, she is also a member of the Faculty of Dental Trainers at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr. Balkaran is also involved in community dental outreach programs and research. Her research interests focus on general health and oral disease, with a strong emphasis on promoting oral health and preventing disease, particularly amongst medically compromised groups.
